sleep on it

I received the premier issue of BlissLiving Home's newsletter today.  Fun reading for us bedding junkies, but *finally* someone has explained in plain English the deal with thread count.

THREAD COUNT REVEALED

The most important thing to understand about thread count is higher numbers do not mean better quality. In fact, there is an argument to be made that a lower thread count may be a more comfortable sheet. Let me explain.

First, you have to understand thread count. The right way to calculate this involves adding up all of the vertical and horizontal threads (warp and weft) in a square inch of fabric. There are only so many threads you can realistically fit into a square inch and generally speaking, anything over 300 is more perceived value than real value. Many companies exaggerate the number by counting the number of ply's in a yarn, so a 300 count sheet using a 2 ply yarn may be promoted as a 600 count.

The key element most people don't think about when purchasing sheets is how they sleep. Everyone perspires while sleeping, so ideally you would want a sheet that is breathable and absorbent, as well as being soft and comfortable. Higher thread counts mean a tighter weave and consequently a sheet that does not breathe as well, or a hotter sleep. If you live in a warm climate already, sleeping with a higher thread count may just make your nights even warmer.

Selecting a good quality sheet involves looking for a brand that uses 100% cotton.  Cotton is still one of the best fabrics when it comes to comfort, durability and care. In August 2005, Consumer Reports issued a report about high thread count sheets from nationally known brands and concluded; "Two hundred is typical and perfectly fine; 400 may provide a finer, softer sheet. Above 400, the only difference is likely to be price."

Speaking from my own experience, BlissLiving makes a fabulous sheet set.
Why yes, you can order them

step outside

{photos: Traditional Home}
How's this for an outside retreat?!
The (lucky) owners of this space hired designer David Pfeiffer to transform the area outside, just off the kitchen, into an alfresco paradise.  Pfeiffer likes to ensure that clients live as easily outdoors as they do indoors, making a strong connection between the interior and exterior.
"One of Pfeiffer's favorite ploys is to have edibles, like the grapes over the dining arbor, and blueberry bushes and strawberry plants in the borders, do double duty as ornamentals. Scent, too, is easy to enjoy in small enclosed gardens, and perfumed plants are prominent here." (Traditional Home)
Yummy.

scent-sual

Oh, boy.  Add this to my (ever growing) list of things I desire.  Thanks to my new fantastically stylish blogger-friend, tailortaste, I learned of Antonia's Flowers perfume.

The signature and original scent is Antonia's Flowers: "a spirited spring bouquet with a top note of freesia.  Soft and distinctly floral."

The lovely Floret is "a fresh floral fragrance with a top note of living sweet pea."  The "top notes of sweet pea mingle gently with marigold, apricot, lily of the valley, rose and tuberose."

Yummy Tiempe Passate is "a rich and sensual fragrance that combines spicy, fruity and floral notes.  Cedarwood, amber, bergamot and clementine blend to create a modern classic."

The newest fragrance offered is Sogni Del Mare:  "new fresh, light downright joyful eau de toilette with you inspired by days and nights spent living by and dreaming of the sea."

They are all impeccable, but as is the case with things subjective, picking the "best" or the "nicest" could stir up a good debate.  (Personally my favorite is Tiempe Passate.  Ummmm.  It's divine!)
For a mere $5 you can decide for yourself.  Antonia's Flowers will send you samples of all the fragrances through their website.  And the $5 is credited toward a future purchase!

b & b hell

After saving some of the money from the sale of my husband's rental property, we were able to take a summer holiday to Switzerland last year.  *This* year, however, things will be different. Since I need to be working at the shop six days a week, there are no trips planned for this summer (aside from going down to Hilton Head for my step-son's graduation).
So, what I'd like to do, is book a relatively close bed & breakfast for a Saturday night, spend the day on Sunday and come home.  Hardly a vacation, but one night away is sometimes all ya need!
The problem is, through endless searching online, the rooms of bed & breakfasts in Virginia look something like this:

or this:

And these places aren't cheap either.  The settings for the most part are lovely; why is this decor so prevalent?  Maybe I'll just spend the money on a new rug for my living room.

drink up!

I hate drinking water.  No, really, I do.  And I've tried the lemons, the limes, the oranges, mint, seltzer, ice, no ice, even hot (like my mother does!), but I just can't stand it.  I know it's good for me; I know I don't drink nearly enough, but honest-to-god, sometimes I will actually go thirsty to avoid drinking it!
Every day, I tell myself that this will be the day that I will miraculously enjoy it, crave it, thirst for it.  And every day as I force those sips down, I mutter, "I hate water."
What is wrong with me?
